Webster Parish takes center stage at tournament

STONEWALL – It was an exciting weekend of baseball for our area teams in the North DeSoto tournament, with the North Webster Knights carrying the banner for Webster Parish with wins over Downsville, Minden and Lakeside.

The Knights (4-0) had a pedestrain 2015 season with a relatively young group of athletes, but if their play early in the year is any indicator of what’s in store for 2016, the Knights will make plenty of noise in Class 3A.

“We finished around .500 last season,” North Webster head coach Dane Peavy said. “We took our lumps last year with a young group of guys, but now we’re grown up.”

The game of the weekend was between North Webster and Minden, a 3-2 win for the Knights against Minden ace Trace Francis. The Minden senior struck out 11 batters in a gutsy performance, but North Webster countered with Connor McClure who went 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts. He allowed just three hits, as did Francis.

In a 2-2 game in the bottom of the seventh, the Knights had two men on when Minden walked three-hole hitter Logan Vidrine to bring up Patrick Modisette. With the tension building, Modisette worked the count full. Francis delivered ball four to bring Blake Atchley home from third and North Webster went crazy, a walk-off walk.

“Minden has a great team,” Peavy said. “They’re well coached. It could have gotten out of hand on us early, but we hung in their and Connor McClure really battled for us on the mound.”

Gunner Stephens, Justin McCready and Gavin Smith had singles for Minden, and Aubrey Dennis had an RBI on a sacrifice. Minden’s record is 1-2 on the young season.

Blake Atchley had a big night for North Webster, blasting a home run off Francis and adding a single with one RBI. Vidrine and Riley Orr had doubles for the Knights and Daniel Lewis addeda single.

In their weekend finale, the Knights made it a weekend sweep of their parish opponents with a 2-0 win over the Lakeside Warriors.

Hayden Corbell tossed a two-hit shutout for the Knights and Logan Vidrine went 2-3 with a double, single and pair of RBIs.

Lakeside’s Tanner Page pitched well in the losing effort, going six innings and striking out six batters. Jake Gray and Cameron Gray had the only two hits for the Warriors.

Lakeside

The Warriors lost their last game of the weekend to North DeSoto, 4-3.

Brayden Jones led the way going 3-3 with three singles and an RBI, while Josh Prince went 2-3 with a single, double and RBI. Prince turned in a nice performance on the mound as well, striking out 11 batters, but walking seven.

Lakeside is in an unfamiliar position at 0-4 this season.
