Acadiana Legal Service Corporation hosting free legal education event on heirship property

by Minden Press-Herald

Louisiana’s heirship crisis continues to hinder families from securing their legacies and accessing vital aid, especially after a disaster. Acadiana Legal Service Corporation (ALSC), with Red River Bank and The Highland Center, is hosting a free legal education event to help residents protect what matters most – their homes and land.

Following years of hurricanes, floods, and other disasters, many Louisiana families have struggled to prove ownership of inherited property, making it difficult for them to receive aid for property damage. Known as heirs’ property, land is passed down without a formal will or legal succession. Many individuals lack the financial means to obtain a succession to claim ownership, resulting in complex ownership disputes, title issues, and an increased risk of loss through tax sales and other means.

The upcoming event will feature legal experts discussing formalizing ownership through successions, drafting wills, and access tools to avoid future disputes. Attendees will learn how a clear title can unlock access to financial support, protect family land, and ensure their legacy is preserved.

WHAT: Preserving Inheritance: Estate Planning & Title Clearing

WHERE: The Highland Center, 520 Olive Street, Shreveport, LA 71104
