Karen’s Korner: Struggles of aging

by Minden Press-Herald

Karen’s Korner,

According to “Graying With Grace,” a Resources//Vitality Support and Daily Living Link for seniors, “There are nine major struggles of aging, from physical limitations to financial resources.”

Physical limitations can include mobility issues, poor health conditions, and sensory or cognitive impairments that make it difficult for seniors to complete everyday tasks and manage their daily activities. Financially, seniors may have to manage limited resources and live on fixed incomes.

However, there are certain things we can do to help with these struggles.

Education is a key factor in controlling the struggles we face. We must do our research to find out what is available and what is feasible for us as seniors to better understand the challenges and struggles ahead of us.

As far as retirement is concerned, there are many resources concerning the latest financial news and expert advice on money management to budget effectively, spend wisely, build a nest egg and live well in retirement, but we cannot wait till the last minute for planning. We must get out in front of this as soon as possible.

There are four areas to consider when planning financially: “Planning for retirement, protecting your family, growing your money, and managing your expenses,” according to Prudential, just one of those resources that are available. There are many more. Do not be afraid to consult a financial firm or a trusted individual to help you.

We can also work on those physical limitations as well through education: regular check-ups with our physician, eating properly, exercise and wellness information. Again, we need to stay on top of these things in order to live a long and satisfying life.

Don’t let aging slip up on you. Stay alert, stay in the know, and stay ahead of it. Remember, “age is just a number!”

Come see us at the Webster Parish Council on Aging, we can age together.
