Karen’s Korner
It is getting that time of the year again. All the holidays are running into one. I don’t know whether to put on my Halloween costume so I can go trick or treating or shopping for the Thanksgiving turkey to put under the string of lights and ornaments on the Christmas Tree, while singing Auld Lang Syne. Whew…it’s going too fast.
It is wild out there. Everyone is already hurrying and scurrying to get a head start on the holidays. Whatever happened to sitting by the fireplace with a good cup of coffee or apple cider, and a good book to read?
I know we get busy, but we also need to stop and realize the “reason for the season.” I often think of those who have gone on before us and I like to reflect on them during this time of the year.
My Grandma would cook a big turkey for Thanksgiving…with all the trimmings. And I mean alllllll the trimmings. She loved preparing it and her kitchen had the best aroma coming from it for days of preparation. She never really used a recipe; she just knew how much to put in at the opportune time. A pinch here and a pinch there, and it was always the “perfect pinch.”
At Christmas, she would cook a hen with dressing and allllll the trimmings again, and ham as well. Daddy loved that ham!
Daddy and I would take off early on one of those cold December mornings to search for the perfect Christmas tree. We would walk the woods until he spotted just the right one. Then we would cut it down and put it in the truck to take home to decorate for Christmas. We had several of those “great adventures,” through the woods, through the years.
And then, Christmas morning was always my favorite time. I was the first one up. But I had to learn patience because I had to wait on Grandma and Jimmie to come into the living room to open presents. Grandma would read the Christmas Story from her Bible. That was the real reason for the season. I am so grateful that my family reared me in a Christian home. What a privilege and honor it was.
I hope we all have great reflections and positive memories of the holidays. My prayer is that we all stop long enough to realize that we are all blessed in so many ways, even today, among the hurrying and scurrying….We just need to remember the “Reason for the Season!”
