High-speed pursuit ends in arrest on Interstate 20

by Minden Press-Herald

A Blanchard man was taken into custody Tuesday morning after a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 20 that reached speeds of up to 130 mph, according to Minden police.

Around 8:47 AM on November 25, an officer monitoring traffic near the 47-mile marker reported seeing a gray Dodge Challenger traveling westbound at 90 mph in a 70-mph zone.

When the officer activated emergency lights and siren, the driver — identified as Drake Edward McKinney, 21 — accelerated, increasing the distance between the vehicles. Police said McKinney reached speeds of 130 mph and left the roadway several times while passing traffic on the right shoulder.

The officer ended the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle near the Interstate 220 interchange. Louisiana State Police later notified Minden police that troopers had deployed spike strips, though McKinney continued traveling and briefly avoided capture.

Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies located McKinney a short time later on Ed’s Boulevard in Caddo Parish and detained him on an active warrant carrying a $20,000 bond. He was turned over to Minden police.

A search warrant executed on the vehicle yielded a Tiffany blue Taurus 9mm handgun and an open bottle of 1800 tequila in the passenger compartment. Police also reported the car was not insured.

McKinney was booked on the warrant along with illegal carrying of weapons, open container, and no insurance.

All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
