Local veterans gathered Friday for a meet and greet hosted by the Webster Parish Council on Aging, an event that was well attended and aimed at connecting veterans with one another and with available support services.
The event featured a complimentary lunch followed by an opportunity for veterans to visit with members of the Webster Parish Veteran’s Safety Net Coalition and other attendees.
Organizers said the strong turnout highlighted the interest in providing opportunities for veterans across Webster Parish to meet, share experiences, and learn about available resources. The Council on Aging plans to host similar gatherings in the future.
Gary Seegers, president of the coalition, said the group’s goal is to ensure local veterans have help available when they face challenges.
“Our mission is to make sure that no veteran in this parish gets in a bind and can’t find a way out. If you need help, call us and we’ll help you find a way around whatever you’re facing,” Seegers said.
During the event, John Rodland of the Webster Parish Veterans Safety Net shared information about another opportunity for veterans to gather each month.
Rodland said Coffee with Vets is held on the first Saturday of each month at 9 AM at Huffman Manor, 1114 Broadway.
“We have lots of coffee and donuts … I invite all veterans to come have a cup of coffee, and we’ll tell war stories or shoot the breeze about something,” Rodland said.
Seegers said the monthly gathering also provides a comfortable setting for veterans who may want to discuss concerns privately.
“It’s a good place to come and sit if you’re facing something you don’t want to bring up in public,” Seegers said.
