Karen’s Korner,

There are many seniors who love to travel. I would, if I still was not working, but I like to have a roof over my head, some form of transportation, and food. So, Hi Ho, Hi Ho…it’s off to work I go. But for those who have a little time, and an adventuresome spirit, travel is just the ticket. And today there are so many places to go that are not that far away, as a matter of fact, they are here and around the Minden area. Here are some ideas from the Tourist Checklist, and I quote:

Short excursions:

The Dorcheat Historical Museum – “A captivating destination for those curious about local culture and history. The museum houses a variety of art and historical artifacts that illustrate the rich heritage of Minden and surrounding areas.”

The Germantown Colony Museum – Tells the story of a small group of settlers led by Count and Countess von Leon. Original buildings, artifacts, and a community cemetery is still there.

Lake Bistineau State Park – “An excellent destination for fishing enthusiasts. The park surrounds a large lake, known for its abundant fish population. Anglers can expect to catch bass, crappie, and catfish, making it an ideal spot for a fun day out.”

Antiques and Shops in Downtown Minden. “Downtown Minden is a treasure trove for antique lovers and shoppers alike. The area is filled with charming shops that offer a unique selection of antiques, vintage finds, and handmade goods. Taking a stroll through this historic district is an adventure waiting to happen!”

Just a hop, skip and jump…

Ruston Farmers Market –“Open year-round to serve the North Louisiana community! Our desire is to provide high quality, fresh, locally grown produce, meat, eggs, honey, plants, flowers, and value-added goods to those in Lincoln and surrounding parishes.”

Another little farther hop, skip, and jump…

Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo – “We connect our visitors with creatures from around the globe, as well as the ones right here in Northeast Louisiana.”

Coca-Cola Museum
“Located within the Biedenharn estate, this museum tells the story of Coca-Cola’s first bottling in Monroe in 1894. You can explore historic artifacts, see original delivery trucks, and enjoy a 5¢ Coke from a vintage vending machine!”

Chennault Aviation & Military Museum – “Honoring veterans, aviation history, and the legacy of Gen. Claire Chennault.”

Stay tuned, there is more to come.
