Council on Aging launches annual fan drive for seniors

by Amber McDown

The Webster Parish Council on Aging began its annual Fan Drive on June 1, seeking community support to help local seniors stay cool during the summer months.

According to Karen Guice, outreach coordinator for the Council on Aging, many older adults throughout Webster Parish struggle with rising temperatures each summer. Some seniors do not have air conditioning and rely on electric fans to remain comfortable in their homes.

For the past several years, the Council on Aging has partnered with local businesses, civic organizations, and community members to collect box fans for distribution to qualifying residents age 60 and older. The fans are provided at no cost to recipients who complete the required application form.

“As the summer months heat up, so many seniors in Webster Parish struggle to stay cool in their homes,” Guice said. “Many do not have air-conditioning, and they depend on fans to keep them comfortable.”

Community members who wish to support the effort may donate one or more box fans. Guice said the Council on Aging will ensure the donations are distributed to seniors in need throughout Webster Parish.

Fans may be dropped off at the Webster Parish Council on Aging, 1482 Sheppard Street, in Minden. Arrangements can also be made for fan pickups by calling the agency.

The Council on Aging is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM. For more information about the Fan Drive or to arrange a donation pickup, call 318-371-3056.

Guice thanked community members for their continued support of the program and the parish’s senior population.
