North Webster graduate receives Kevin J. Washington Memorial Scholarship

Recent North Webster High School graduate Ivion Harris was recognized as the recipient of the Kevin J. Washington Memorial Scholarship during the regular meeting of the Webster Parish School Board on June 1.

The scholarship was presented by Kevin Thompson of Taylor and Sons. Harris was unable to attend the meeting because he was participating in an entering freshman event at Morehouse College. His father and grandmother accepted the scholarship on his behalf.

A video message from Harris was played during the presentation.

“I’m incredibly grateful for your generosity and your belief in my future,” Harris said.

Speaking about the scholarship’s namesake, Harris added, “Knowing the impact he had on this community makes this honor deeply personal to me. I hope I continue to live up to the excellence and leadership he wanted to see in young people from this area.”

Harris graduated magna cum laude from North Webster High School and plans to pursue a career in pathology.

The scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates academic achievement, leadership, school involvement, and community service. Applicants are evaluated based on grade-point average, ACT scores, letters of recommendation, participation in community activities, and active involvement in their schools.

This marks the second year the scholarship has been awarded.

The scholarship honors the memory of Kevin J. Washington, who dedicated much of his life to serving students and supporting education in Webster Parish as Assistant Superintendent and Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance. Washington died unexpectedly on July 23, 2024, following a brief illness.

Washington’s daughter, Kaylaan Washington, shared remarks about the scholarship and her father’s legacy.

“My dad, Kevin Washington, dedicated his life to the betterment of the Webster Parish school system,” she said. “It is clear to both my mom and myself that his impact was deeply felt by so many.”

She said the family was honored that a scholarship had been established in his memory.

“We are touched and honored that a scholarship was dedicated in his memory. Knowing that his legacy will continue to uplift students through educational opportunities is a meaningful and lasting tribute,” Washington said.

She added that the scholarship reflects the values her father championed throughout his life.

“He believed deeply in the power of a good education and doing the best in everything you do. This scholarship reflects the values he held so dear. Thank you for keeping his memory alive in such a meaningful way.”

Through the memorial scholarship, Washington’s commitment to education and student success continues to impact future generations of Webster Parish students.
