The Webster Parish School Board recognized Special Education Supervisor Melanie Lewing as Employee of the Month during its regular meeting Monday, June 1, honoring both her service to the district and her upcoming retirement.
The recognition was presented by Kevin Thompson of Taylor and Sons.
“We’re calling this Employee of the Month, but it’s really more of a career acknowledgement,” Thompson said.
In a nomination letter presented during the meeting, Lewing was praised for her leadership, dedication, and commitment to students throughout her career.
“I am proud to nominate Special Education Supervisor Mrs. Melanie Lewing for the Taylor and Sons Webster Parish Employee of the Month,” the letter stated. “Mrs. Lewing is truly one of the people who helps our district run smoothly every single day.”
The nomination described Lewing as dependable, hardworking, and always willing to assist when needed.
“Mrs. Lewing brings her no-nonsense vision to every situation,” the letter stated. “She offers clarity and wisdom to even the toughest of cases. Her steadfast demeanor is coupled with respect and grace that she offers freely to our staff, students, and parents.”
The letter further highlighted her attention to detail, communication skills, and dedication to serving students with exceptional needs.
“What stands out most about Mrs. Lewing is her genuine care for our students with exceptional needs,” the letter stated. “She goes above and beyond to offer support and advice to our employees in order to provide what is needed most for our students. She consistently makes our students’ well-being her number one goal.”
In addition to overseeing special education services, Lewing was credited with handling a wide variety of responsibilities throughout the district.
“Although Mrs. Lewing’s official title is Special Education Supervisor, she wears a multitude of hats from working on policy to handling healthcare to offering guidance in a myriad of ways,” the letter stated. “Her expertise and knowledge are truly invaluable.”
The nomination concluded by noting that Lewing’s contributions will be greatly missed when she retires.
Addressing the board, Lewing reflected on her career in Webster Parish.
“I am very grateful for the opportunities that I’ve had here, for the opportunities to work with, at this point, generations of kids,” she said. “It’s been so much fun to watch kids become parents and then see them again.”
Lewing said serving the district has been both an honor and a privilege.
“It’s been my honor and privilege to work here,” she said. “It’s been 25 years that I’ve been an administrator in this district. I will miss it, but I know there are great things in store. Thank you all.”
The Webster Parish School Board will hold its next regular meeting on July 7. Meetings are open to the public.
