Sarah Hudson Pierce: How to Grow Roses

by David Specht

As I awoke from a deep sleep this morning I immediately remembered my dream about when I planted my first roses, six to be sure, right next to the personage where we lived in 1983.

It was my first attempt and they all lived and bloomed.

A few years after we moved I called the church and got the minister’s wife on the phone and she gushed and asked if I was the one who planted the roses and was happy to tell me how much she still enjoyed the roses, which leads me to what one of the older church members told me. He said

“You taught me how.to grow roses. All you do is dig a hole and plant the rose.”

There’s some truth in what he said. After moving to Plain Dealing  I planted 75 roses on.one end of the personage and used cuttings for all sorts of occasions.

Basically all I did was dig a hole and add  a little compost and of course watered but I had one lady, Betty, who lived next door who

told me she was the.only one who truly enjoyed seeing the roses.

Back to the bottom line. Growing roses and writing have something in common.

Put the thoughts down as they come but don’t overthink what you are saying but let it come from the heart and remember what Mark Twain said “write what you know about.”

Growing roses gives me time to be in nature.

Having moved a few years ago I have a limited flower garden but this spring I  planted 4 red roses with plans to add 2 more to fill in the space.

I must add that God has always gotten me to the right place at the right time as I enjoy writing and growing roses.
