The Minden Crimson Tide opened District 1-4A play with a 39-0 victory over the Bossier Bearkats Thursday night at Memorial Stadium in Bossier City.
Minden improved to 4-0 for the second time in the last three years. With at least six games and likely the playoffs left, the Crimson Tide need only one more victory to equal last season’s total. Bossier dropped to 2-2 with its second straight loss.
Minden had the game well in hand by halftime. The Tide scored on their first two drives then added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter for a 27-0 lead.
“I thought we got out there and played well overall,” Minden Head Coach Spencer Heard said. “The defense played well. Didn’t let them score so you can’t do any better than that.”
The Tide dominated, but Heard said they still have some things to work on.
“The only thing on the game it just didn’t feel totally clean,” he said. “There’s some stuff we got to clean up on offense, but we scored. We ran the ball pretty well and threw it OK. So it was a good game.
“I thought our special teams were good, better than they have been overall. Our kicker’s getting better and punting was pretty good. We’re improving in different aspects, but yeah, I was happy with the way we played.”
Minden junior running back Lucas Owens Jr. ran for 135 yards on 15 carries in the first half, per stats kept for the KASO-AM broadcast. He finished with 153 on 17.
Owens scored on runs of 2 and 5 yards in the first half. He had a 42-yard run that set up a touchdown.
The Tide had 214 yards rushing. Jaden Johnson added 38 yards on five carries.
Johnson, who has scored at least one touchdown in all four games, also caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Kaiden King in the second half.
Linebacker Javen Calloway scored two touchdowns on offense in the first half on an 8-yard pass from King and a 1-yard run.
Minden didn’t need to put the ball in the air much. King completed 7-of-14 passes for 83 yards with one interception.
Jardon Carey scored the game’s final touchdown on a 4-yard run. Carter Martin kicked three extra points,
Bossier played without injured star quarterback Montrevell Lewis for the second straight game.
“Without him they’re they’re definitely a different team,” Heard said .”Young guy in there and he’s trying to figure it out. They tried to throw it around a little bit. But I thought our defense was flying around making plays and getting after them, so it made it tough on him.”
Lewis’ replacement Shante Wells, a freshman, was 10-of-26 for 88 yards. Abreon Curry and Braylen Ferrell had one interception each.
Minden will head west down I-20 again next Friday to face Woodlawn at Independence Stadium. The Knights (0-4) lost to defending district champion North DeSoto 55-0 Thursday night.
