Joint statement from Senate President Cameron Henry and House Speaker Phillip Devillier on state budget surplus

by Minden Press-Herald

In response to the Fiscal Status Statement reported in the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget today estimating a $565 million budget surplus for the budget year that ended June 30th, Senate President Cameron Henry and House Speaker Phillip DeVillier issued the following joint statement:

“Today’s good news encourages us to stay committed to the path we have chosen since this legislative term began:  a dedication to good fiscal policy that reins in spending and prioritizes paying down debt and investing in a brighter future for our Louisiana families.  Following our state’s constitutional guidelines, we will use this surplus to strengthen our state’s rainy-day fund, pay down more of our state retirement systems’ debt, improve more roads, complete more capital construction projects around the state and fortify our coast.  We are proud to be revitalizing the state we love.”

The predicted Fiscal Year 2026 surplus must be certified by the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget and officially be recognized by the Revenue Estimating Conference early next year before the legislature can appropriate that money.
