I remember standing in the foyer of the funeral home with my brother during the planning of my father’s funeral years ago. In my hand, I held a dress bag with my daddy’s new suit, his favorite shirt and a brand, new tie. I remember saying to my brother that it was sad that this bag was the sum total that my Daddy had left behind.
He looked at me, with a gleam in his eye and he said, “I’m looking at the sum total right now.” And of course, that was me.
I knew that my Daddy had left so much more…than just a suit bag, but at the time, it was overwhelming and for a fleeting moment I had lost sight of all he had accomplished, and the many wonderful memories I had of my Daddy. But as I get older, I realize just how smart my Daddy truly was, and I see his point of view in a much clearer way, and in almost every day, something reminds me of him!
All who have gone before us have prepared the way, and I guess that statement is true; “The true mark of a man is what is left when he is no longer with us.”
