Webster schools make the grade

Three Webster Parish schools increased by one letter grade and a total of eight schools showed an increase in their scoring percentages over last year, according to school report card results released this week by the Louisiana Department of Education.

Report cards summarize and evaluate academic achievement for the 2013-14 school year, and provide parents and educators information on the performance of schools statewide.

Locally, Central Elementary, J.A. Phillips Middle School and North Webster Junior High all advanced one full letter grade on their 2014 scores, each moving from a “D” to a “C,” state officials report. Overall, North Webster Junior High showed the largest increase with a score 8.3 percent higher in 2014 than in 2013.

Central Elementary’s increase was 3.4 percent while J.A. Phillips Middle School was up 6.6 percent.

Highest grades in the parish were recorded by North Webster Upper Elementary, North Webster Lower Elementary and Lakeside Junior-Senior High. All three schools earned a “B” on their report card with North Webster Upper and North Webster Lower elementaries each scoring a 95.5 while Lakeside scored an 86.0.

Schools showing an increase over last year were North Webster Upper Elementary, Doyline High, Central Elementary, J.A. Phillips Middle School, E.S. Richardson Elementary, North Webster Junior High, North Webster Lower Elementary and North Webster High.

Overall, Webster Parish received a letter grade of “C” with a score of 83 percent, a very slight increase over last year’s 82.8 percent. Louisiana schools received a “B” collectively, scoring 89.2 percent compared to last year’s 88.5 percent.

Around the area, Bossier Parish schools earned the highest grade with a “B” and 98.3 percent, an increase over last year’s 93.6.
Bienville Parish also received a “B” with a score of 88 percent compared to 83.6 from 2013. Caddo Parish earned a “C” and scored the same 79.4 percent as last year while Claiborne Parish was graded a “D” based on 60.6 percent, a drop from last year’s 66.5 percent.

Across the state, 10 of the 74 school systems received an “A” grade, led by Zachary Community Schools with a 114.4 percentage. Other systems receiving the highest letter grade include parishes of Ascension, Livingston, Orleans (excluding recovery district schools), Plaquemines, St. Charles, St. Tammany, Vernon and West Feliciana plus Central Community Schools.
