Walking group coming to town

by Minden Press-Herald

A recreational walking club known as the East Texas Trekkers have set their sights on several communities in Louisiana, including Minden.

The Trekkers are a recreational walking club, one of over 200 clubs across the United States affiliated with the American Volkssport Association (www.AVA.org).

The club has walked all over northeast Texas but was looking for some new places to explore, and Louisiana looked like a good place to check out. The club has sponsored walks in Shreveport and Natchitoches for several years, and after the last club in Louisiana folded, added walks in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

The Trekkers thought that it would be fun to try to do a walk in every parish in the state, all 64 of them.

So now it is time to check out other areas of Louisiana. They have established seven walks in the North Central parishes of Louisiana including city walks in Minden, Arcadia, Coushatta, and Ruston and nature walks in Lake Claiborne, Lake D’Arbonne, and Jimmie Davis state parks.

The club is hosting group walks Jan 13-15. These walks originate in Minden at the Best Western Hotel at 1411 Sibley Rd. The walkers will gather each morning between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the hotel to decide which walks to do that day, register for the walks and then carpool to the various hikes.

The Trekkers are expecting walkers from Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Georgia, and Virginia.

The walks are open to everyone, and you do not have to be a member of any club in order to participate. First time walkers may walk for free, but then after that, there is a $3 charge per walk.
