Funeral services for Mr. Sammy W. Smith, age 83, of Springhill, LA, will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, February 10, 2023 at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Terry Hughes, Bro. Todd Pickard and Bro. Phillip Carroll officiating. Interment will follow in Springhill Cemetery, Springhill, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 9, 2023, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Bailey Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith was born on May 10, 1939 to John Houston and Allie Mae Martin Smith in McComb, MS and passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 in Shreveport, LA. He was a native of Summit, MS, a former resident of McComb, MS and has been a resident of Springhill since 1971. He was a graduate of Mars Hill High School in Summit, MS and a graduate of John A. Gupton Mortuary College in Nashville, TN. Sammy began his career working with Hartman Funeral Home in McComb, MS in 1958. He and his family moved to Springhill in August, 1971 when he became employed with Bailey Funeral Home. He was a totally dedicated person to his profession and to serving the people of North Webster, Bossier and Claiborne Parishes. He loved people and tried his best to help families through a very difficult time in their life. He was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church and a former member of the Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy Smith; son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Stacy Smith of Haughton, LA; grandchildren, Cecelia and husband, Nate, Bailey, Macy, Mackenzie and Hunter; and great-grandchildren, Brantley and Caroline Jane. He is also survived by a number of other family members, nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Melissa “Lisa” Smith, on August 18, 1985; his parents, four brothers and one sister.
Sammy was a strong supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and in lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to St. Jude or to the Shriner’s Hospital.
