Earlier in June, Gov. John Bel Edwards declared July 3, 2023 will be recognized as a state holiday this year. It should be noted that state and local institutions as well as some businesses will be closed in recognition of this holiday.
The reason for this is Independence Day, July 4, will be taking place on a Tuesday. The governor saw fit to have Monday, July 3, be a holiday as well, making it more convenient for people who want to travel and gather with friends and family for the holiday.
“Monday, July 3, 2023, is declared a legal holiday in the State of Louisiana and shall be observed as a day of public rest,” the proclamation declaring July 3 as a state holiday read.
“The citizens of the State of Louisiana and the officers and employees of the departments of the State will benefit from an additional legal holiday during a period when Americans traditionally gather together to remember and celebrate our country’s independence.”
