High school football: Lakeside runs past Ringgold

by Russell Hedges

Keeping things simple worked well for the Lakeside Warriors Friday night.

Relying mostly on their running game, the Warriors defeated the Ringgold Redskins 41-16 at Ringgold.

Lakeside evened its record at 1-1. Ringgold dropped to 1-1.

“We’re getting better,” Lakeside Head Coach Michael Santalices said. “I mean we’re just still young and green and all that but as time goes on, week in and week out, as the weeks go on we’ll continue to get better and continue to open up the offense.

“We’re kind of bland, plain Jane vanilla. We’re just pounding the rock.”

Jordan Case scored three rushing touchdowns and Tamarjah Ferrell two. Brock Case threw a touchdown pass to Taron Riley.

Santalices said turnovers remain an area of concern. The Warriors fumbled three times, including one at the Ringgold 2 on their opening drive.

Turnovers were a key factor in Lakeside’s loss to Arcadia in the season opener.

“Last week we weren’t able to overcome that,” he said. “This week we did.”

Santalices was impressed with Ringgold, which was coming off only its third win in the last five years.

“They had a couple of big plays on us,” he said. “They’ve got a great athlete at quarterback and a great receiver. He just makes jump balls. Throw it in the air and he comes down with it. He did it to us two or three times tonight.”

But the Redskins’ lone TDs came on a kickoff return and against the second team late in the game.

“I think we have a good team,” Santalices said. “We just need to get a little more experience.”

Lakeside visits Plain Dealing Friday. The Lions (0-2) lost to Lincoln Prep 44-0 Thursday.
