Being secluded in the house for several cold days has provided time to get other things acommplished. But, have I done them?
I must admit that I have done very few of the things which I had planned to do. First of all, I thought I could catch up with some reading. I have a book which my daughter shared with me and I have made very litle progress on it.
The book is about the Civil War and takes place in and around Franklin, Tenneesee. She purchased the book while on a trip to the area and read it rather quickly and passed it on. While I have formerly been an avid reader, I have been slack in doing so for the past two years. Normaly, I would have finished the book rather quickly and returned it . “The Widow of the South”, by Robert Hicks is acclaimed as “Engrossing…Compelling.” by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Once I began to read, I was caught up in the story, however there was a problem. The print was so small I had trouble seeing it. I must admit though, that I am probably needing new glasses and my lighting wasn’t good by my recliner, where I tend to sit to read. And, with those two things making it difficult, I tended to drift off to sleep. (That last was probably my biggest excuse.)
With intentions to get new glasses in March and perhaps more lighting by my chair, I will try to return to the story and finish it.
Then, hopefully, I can get back into reading more as I once did.
With not much reading taking place, I have found myself back in the kitchen more.
Last week, I made cranberry/blueberry scones and we have devoured them already. I used the recipe for Buttery Scones which is in my cookbook, Favorite Foods from Mimi’s Kitchen. After they were done, and still warm, I drizzled a powdered sugar glaze on them. I really made them to have with coffee, but we snacked on them throughout the day.
Later in the week, I tried a new recipe, Shrimp Pasta, one our daughter shared with me. We had lunch with them recently and this was the main dish. I had never had this before. It was delicious and I had to have the recipe so I could try it. Needless to say, mine wasn’t as good as hers but it wasn’t too bad. In fact, we may even have leftovers.
We have found ourselves sipping hot apple cider during the cold days, as well as our usual coffee. It is strange how your habits can change according to the weather.
Since we have had trouble attending church the past several months, we are blessed that our church services broadcast each week. However, technical problems have prevented them from being on for the last two weeks. We have missed them and look forward to when they are back on.
I don’t know if you are familiar with Brenda Gantt, who has a cooking show, but she is a devout Christian who shares her faith on every show. Today, she was unable to attend church, but she got out her Bible, read a scripture, and shared as if in Sunday School. She never fails to express her love of Jesus and invites her listeners to do likewise.
Here’s hoping the next few days bring better weather and we can get back in our routine. Meanwhile, stay warm and stay busy..
