The Louisiana Legislature commenced its 2024 Regular Session at noon today, marking the third assembly of lawmakers this year. Governor Jeff Landry addressed a joint gathering of House and Senate members alongside statewide elected officials, outlining his priorities for the session, which include education, insurance reform, and the economy.
With over 1,000 bills already filed by the 144 legislators—comprising 39 Senators and 104 Representatives—the 85-day legislative session, which encompasses the state budget, promises thorough deliberations.
“As we embark on this session, there is a palpable sense of hope,” remarked Speaker of the House Phillip DeVillier. “Members I’ve engaged with are eager for change because Louisiana deserves better. While debates on issues and solutions may ensue, we are steadfast in our commitment to collaborative efforts for positive change.”
“The Senate anticipates productive collaboration with the Governor on insurance reform and a proactive stance on economic development, differing from past approaches in Louisiana,” stated Senate President Cameron J. Henry. “Furthermore, there is notable interest and discourse surrounding a Constitutional Convention, with many crucial details yet to be explored, ensuring further deliberations ahead.”
