High school baseball: Lakeside falls to No. 4 DeQuincy in quarterfinals

by Russell Hedges

The No. 5 seed Lakeside Warriors fell to No. 4 DeQuincy 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the non-select Division IV playoffs Thursday.

Because of heavy rain that moved through the Southwest Louisiana area, the game was moved from DeQuincy to Westlake High School.

The game was mostly a pitchers’ duel. Lakeside trailed 1-0 after five innings. But DeQuincy scored three in the sixth, taking advantage of three walks and a two-RBI double.

Lakeside starter Hunter Sutton allowed three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two. Jordan Isbell got the final two outs in the sixth.

DeQuincy’s Carson Rainwater pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts and four walks.

Sutton, Isbell and Jon Jon Dick had one single apiece.

Lakeside threatened in the first, putting runners at first and second with one out. But the Warriors couldn’t capitalize.

In the sixth, Isbell led off with his single. Peyton Gray’s sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Dick then bunted safely and Isbell moved to third. But Rainwater induced a flyout and got a strikeout to end the threat.

Lakeside closed its season 16-15. DeQuincy will take a 19-9 record to the state tournament in Sulphur.
