The Webster Parish School Board and Webster Parish community are grieving the loss of Assistant Superintendent Kevin Washington, who passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 23, following a brief illness. Superintendent Johnny Rowland shared his heartfelt reflections on Washington’s impact and legacy.
“Mr. Kevin Washington, Assistant Superintendent of the Webster Parish School Board, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. He had experienced a brief illness before his passing. Mr. Washington was beloved and highly respected by scores of people that knew him. I am proud to say he was not only a colleague, but a dear friend,” Rowland stated.
Washington, who served as Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance, was known for his unwavering advocacy for all students, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic status. “Mr. Washington was a fierce advocate for ALL students. Ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic status did not matter to him. Mr. Washington saw our students for what they really are, children who deserve an opportunity to receive a quality education so they can have the chance to succeed in life,” Rowland said.
As the district’s hearing officer, Washington was commended for his respectful and dignified treatment of families. Rowland noted that many parents had expressed their appreciation for Washington’s considerate handling of meetings over the years.
A native of Springhill, Washington was a graduate of Springhill High School, class of 1983, and a proud member of the Lumberjack football team, where he played defensive tackle. Both of his parents were employees of the Webster Parish School System, with his father, Jonathan, serving as principal at Brown Middle School for many years.
“Mr. Washington loved Webster Parish and seeing our students achieve great things brought him much joy and satisfaction. On behalf of the Webster Parish School Board, we offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Debbie, and their sweet daughter, Kaylaan. Mr. Kevin Washington was a true public servant and he will be sorely missed,” Rowland concluded.
A memorial service will be held in Mr. Washington’s honor on Friday, August 2 at the Greater New Bethel AME Church in Springhill, beginning at 6 PM. On Saturday, there will be a public viewing at the CAC Building beginning at 9 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11 AM. Mr. Washington will be interred in Emerson, Arkansas.
Washington’s contributions to the Webster Parish School System and his dedication to student welfare have left an indelible mark on the community.
