9th Annual Prayer in the Park unites Minden community

by Amber McDown

A spirit of unity and prayer filled Academy Park on August 17 during the 9th Annual Prayer in the Park event. Local Christians gathered to seek divine guidance for the upcoming school year, the well-being of the town, and the country’s future.

The event began with an opening prayer by Bro. Chet Johnson, setting the tone for the morning. John Gill Jr. followed with a soulful rendition of “Falling in Love with Jesus,” providing a heartfelt moment of worship.

Officer Brandy Powell, a school resource officer, addressed the crowd with a message of vigilance. She stressed the importance of community responsibility for children’s safety and well-being, reminding everyone that “it takes a village to raise a child.” Powell offered her support to parents, ensuring that she is always available to help protect students.

Reverend Dr. Grady Smith, the principal of Woodlawn High School in Shreveport, delivered a stirring message about the need for love and care in the lives of children, particularly in light of the violence he has seen claim the lives of many students. He emphasized that Minden holds something special, urging the community to safeguard it by embracing the next generation with love and support.

Michael Walker, the event organizer, thanked everyone who attended and contributed to the day’s success. He praised the efforts of Bro. Chet Johnson, Officer Brandy Powell, John Gill Jr., and Dr. Smith for their roles in the event. Walker also extended his gratitude to community supporters, including Walmart Academy #87, Coke Plant, and key individuals like Kyle Allums, Dominique Walker, and his wife, Chequella Walker, who has been instrumental in all their events despite not being able to attend.

“We had a great turnout today, and I’m already looking forward to next year,” Walker said.

The 9th Annual Prayer in the Park continues to be a reminder of the power of collective prayer and action in the Minden community.
