Thanks to five lost fumbles , the North Webster Knights were down 26-0 at halftime against the Homer Pelicans Friday night at Ronny G. Beard Memorial Stadium.
The Knights got their offense revved up for the first time this season in the second half but couldn’t overcome the turnovers and fell 32-22.
“I put new guys in new spots and reshuffled the entire offensive line, put somebody at center who hadn’t played it in years, since middle school,” first-year North Webster Head Coach Christopher Wilson said. “Just took us some time to get him comfortable. But we just put the ball on the ground. And the exchanges from center to quarterback weren’t good early. And then quarterback to running back because the timing was thrown off with bad snaps.”
Both North Webster and Homer are now 1-4.
“Every time we fumbled the ball they scored,” Wilson said. “We dig ourselves in a 26-0 hole. But after halftime they played really well. We were moving the ball … I think (Christian) Whitlock had more passing yards than they’ve had since 2018. He didn’t throw an interception tonight.”
Wilson is looking forward to his team putting two good halves together.
“We haven’t played a 48-minute game,” he said .
The Knights cut the lead to 26-14 on a 3-yard run by J’Kobe Lawson and Whitlock’s PAT in the fourth quarter. But Homer answered with a 33-yard touchdown run.
Lawson had a huge game, rushing for 174 yards on 36 carries. He scored the Knights’ first touchdown on a 3-yard run in the third quarter.
North Webster’s final touchdown came on a 8-yard pass from Whitlock to Martavion White. Lawson scored the two-point conversion,
Whitlock completed 7-of-11 passes for 126 yards. White had four catches for 75 yards, including a 45-yard reception. Sophomore Jquarion Easter had two catches for 40 yards.
Jeremiah Washington had three solo tackles and four assists. Jasavion Miller had eight assists. Jamyrian Jackson had one solo and six assists. Kemaurion Jefferson had two solo and four assists.
North Webster will make a 120-mile trip southwest to Garrison, Texas, Friday to face Garrison High. The Bulldogs (3-1) defeated Lovelady 28-14 in their last game Sept. 20 per MaxPreps.
