Karen’s Korner: Compassion

Karen’s Korner,

Every Senior Adult has a voice, and every Senior Adult needs a voice that can be heard over the roar of the everyday rhetoric and chaos. So many seniors are often forgotten and left behind due to the loss of many family members as well as friends. They sometimes outlive all those around them, and then they are left to fend for themselves.

And at other times, family members do not choose to check on them or care to contact them due to serious family disagreements or struggles that have been prevalent for years. These people end up alone without anyone who shows concern and care for them. They are really a lost generation in need of “compassion.”

I think the lack of compassion in our world today is growing, and people are missing out on a beautiful gift, the gift of compassion.

Webster defines compassion as: “a sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it!”

I guess the question to ask is, “Do I really care about my fellow man, to the extent that I can find ways of helping and being a compassionate person in their life?”

This quote I read recently says, “Let our hearts be stretched out in compassion toward others, for everyone is walking their own difficult path.”

Another writer says it this way: “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”:

The Word of God speaks to this often: Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”  Colossians 3:12

There is always a place of compassion in our hearts, lives and spirits, especially for our senior adult population. Many of them truly need a heart of compassion to share with them and make their day better.

We have a very compassionate staff at the Webster Parish Council on Aging and love to spend time with the Senior Adults of Webster Parish. Come and join us and just maybe you will be a part of a compassionate folks who truly care and are concerned about you.
