Karen’s Korner: Christmas is upon us once again

by Minden Press-Herald

Karen’s Korner,

Christmas is upon us once again. I know you have noticed the increase in traffic around the grocery store, Wal-Mart, the banks, and the merchants here in Minden. Even though Christmas time is a happy, joyful, wonderful time of the year, there are still some helpful precautions we need to take as seniors to protect ourselves over the holidays.

  • Be careful when driving, especially during peak hours.
  • If you are alone, let someone know where you are going when you leave home.
  • Stay aware in parking lots, people are not very careful and are in a hurry at times.
  • Try not to shop or drive after dark unless necessary.
  • Observe all traffic rules and regulations…BE AWARE!

Scams are rampant around this time of the year. Remember our three statements concerning those scams:

  1. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!
  2. Never give out personal information on the phone unless you know exactly who you are speaking with, or you have initiated the call!
  3. Beware of door-to-door solicitors who are selling a service or product. Purchase from reputable sales…locally if possible!

It is sad that we have to be on guard for our social, financial, and physical protection, especially, this time of the year, but we do.

As the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”  At least, that’s what Ben Franklin and my Grandma said!

Merry Christmas!
