Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana hosts spectacular Canine Carnival Gala

by Stacey Tinsley

The Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana (HSNWLA) hosted its highly anticipated Canine Carnival Gala on April 5, transforming the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum into a dazzling, circus-themed celebration—all in the name of saving dogs in need in support of the rescue mission efforts of the organization.

The inspiration behind the event came from a deeply personal place for Kady Maranto, board treasurer of HSNWLA. Maranto’s adopted dog, Minka, survived unthinkable abuse before finding safety and love through the rescue.

“She came to us three years ago after being dragged behind a truck and having her tail cut off non-surgically. She was broken in both body and spirit,” Maranto said. “The volunteers at our rescue nursed her back to health, and the moment I met her, I knew she was meant to be mine.”

Minka’s story is just one of many. HSNWLA continually takes in dogs from dire situations—including hoarding cases, extreme neglect and abuse. The Canine Carnival Gala serves as a critical fundraiser, with 100% of proceeds going toward medical care for rescued dogs.

“It costs approximately $20,000 per month to keep our rescue running, so events like this are essential,” Maranto said.

The gala was an immersive experience, featuring jugglers, stilt walkers, balloon artists, acrobats, and themed cuisine catered by Southern Faire’s Cindy Gleason Johnson. Attendees enjoyed cash bars, an incredible silent auction and live entertainment—all while supporting HSNWLA’s lifesaving work.

“The Canine Carnival is truly a magical night, but its real impact is in the lives it helps save,” Maranto said. “We rescue dogs from unimaginable conditions, and thanks to the generosity of our community, we can continue to provide them with the care they deserve.”

One of the most pressing recent cases involves dogs rescued from a hoarding situation in Doyline, Louisiana. Many arrived malnourished, sick and in desperate need of medical attention. The funds raised at the gala will directly contribute to surgeries, medications and rehabilitation efforts for these and other rescued dogs.

As a no-kill, 100% volunteer-based organization, HSNWLA relies entirely on donations and community support. For those unable to attend the gala, there are still many ways to help:

  • Share posts on social media
  • Volunteer by filling out an application on the HSNWLA website
  • Donate supplies or funds—a list of needed items is available at www.hsnwla.com

Maranto expressed deep appreciation for the sponsors who made the event possible.

“We couldn’t do this without their belief in our mission. Their generosity allows us to continue rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming dogs in need.”

With another successful Canine Carnival Gala completed, the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana remains committed to its mission—ensuring that every dog, no matter their past, gets a chance at a better future.
