Barbara (Bobbie) Porterfield Land

by Will Phillips

Barbara (Bobbie) Porterfield Land, 82, died peacefully at home in Minden, Louisiana, surrounded by loved ones on October 15, 2020.

Born November 3, 1937, in Bloomberg, TX, Barbara was the oldest daughter of Beulha Cupp & Reuben H. Porterfield. She was brought up in a happy household with her three sisters.

As a teenager she fell in love with and married the love of her life, Charles M. (Bo) Land, together they raised three sons (Skip, Lenny, and Bodie).  Their lives were filled with lots of love, laughter, and activities that involved horses, sports, traveling, church, and family.  Trips to the mountains, Silver Dollar City, and Sea World were favorite events with the boys and later with the grandsons.  In recent years, Barbara continued to enjoy traveling with her sisters.  They would pile in her car and GO!   Barbara liked to be the driver and in control.  She always loved family gatherings at any time, but especially during the holidays.  She would take off work a week ahead of time to cook and prepare for a big gathering that would include her family, extended family, friends, and her favorite bikers from The Compound. Everyone was welcome in her heart and in her home.  Nothing made her happier than time with family and especially being Granny to her grandsons and great-grandchildren.

Barbara was always active in her church and her community.  She was a very devout Christian and served the Lord in many ways, including playing the organ and piano at Gilgal Baptist Church for many years.  She also took pride in working with the Gilgal Water System and helping to bring many improvements to the community.

She worked for Moore and LaBruyere most of her career.  While working there she furthered her education at LSU Shreveport, along with many CPA classes along the way. She tried retiring several times only to continue to work until 2018.  She felt valued and loved her tenure there because the lifelong relationships she developed with her co-workers and clients.  After finally retiring in 2018, Barbara still enjoyed going into help out when needed.  She loved helping others.

Left to remember her love and legacy are her three sisters:  Margaret Carver of Albany, Georgia, Marjorie Hammontree of Tyler, TX, and Gene Cathey of Heflin, LA; Her sons Charles M. (Skip) Land of Minden, and Lenny (Nancy) St. Germain of Sibley. Her grandchildren: Mark (Whitney) Land, Eric Land, and Chris Land; Jason (Courtnie) St.Germain and Michael St. Germain; Amber Land and Treason Land, Clay and Ryan (Sarah) Patterson. Her great-grandchildren:  Stella, Bodie and June Land; Brooks and Olivia St. Germain; Brenden, Colin, Ethan, Evan, Owen, and Abram Patterson, Caden Phinnisee.
