Billy Joe Cross

by Minden Press-Herald

Bill Cross was born July 11, 1930 to Ralph and Leslie Cross in Shreveport, Louisiana and entered into rest Sunday, April 18, 2021, peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.

Bill grew up and lived most of his 90 years in the family home. He began working in the Homer, Louisiana Oilfield in his teens after graduating from Harris High School that is now known as Harris Baptist Encampment.

On December 22, 1950, he married the love of his life, Janette Kimbell and devoted himself to her for 70 years. He worked the oilfield until the late 60’s and then worked a number of years for the Town of Homer at the light plant as the foreman. During those years he started his own oil company called JanMar Oil Company in the Homer oilfield. Bill sold his company in the early 80”s, but had so much oil in his blood he went back to work for an oil company reading gauges in Athens until finally retiring in the 1990’s.

Preceding him in death was his loving wife, Janette, his parents, and siblings, George Cross, Jack Cross,  Margie Guillory and Evelyn Cross.

He leaves behind his son, Bill Cross, Jr. and wife Debbie of Homer; daughters, Janis Ramsey and husband Mike of Homer, Jayne Dominie and husband Eric of Minden and Teresa Jones and husband Levi of Mountain Home, Arkansas; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. A host of nieces and nephews in the Cross and Kimbell family that he loved dearly. Plus, his loving church family of Holly Springs Baptist Church where he served as deacon since his early 20’s.

His infectious laugh, tales of early days and seeing “Bigfoot”, and his kind and giving spirit will be deeply missed. Bill never met a stranger and never turned down a chance to help someone. He leaves behind an enormous legacy.
