Local pastors and faith leaders are invited to learn more about the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program and how churches can support children in foster care during an informational event scheduled for September 24.
Sandra Samuel, CASA supervisor, announced the event during the Ministers’ Breakfast on Tuesday at the Minden Community House.
The come-and-go event will be held from 9 AM to 3 PM at the CASA office, 720 Main Street. Attendees can learn how CASA advocates for children in foster care, hear about the role of CASA volunteers, and learn how churches and faith leaders can partner with the program to provide hope, stability, and support for children in the community..
Samuel said there are currently more than 60 children in foster care in Webster Parish, but only six CASA volunteers.
“I have over 20 cases without a volunteer,” she said.
Samuel said she hopes the informational event will help connect CASA with local pastors and church members who may be willing to volunteer or help spread the word about the program’s need for advocates.
“I’m hoping to connect with you and get your prayers and your support,” Samuel said.
A CASA volunteer is a trained community member appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of a child who has experienced abuse or neglect. Volunteers gather information, monitor cases, communicate with those involved in a child’s care, and help ensure the child’s needs are represented in court.
The September 24 event is intended to help local churches and faith leaders understand the need for CASA volunteers and explore ways they can support children in foster care.
