Central Elementary honors veterans

by Minden Press-Herald

Dubberly, Louisiana – Monday November 10th, Central Elementary held its annual Veterans Day Program.  The celebration coincides with the 250th birthday of the US Marine Corp.

Students and families recognized those who have served in our country’s Armed Forces. Principal, Daniel Lee, “I thought this morning on my way here about the change in weather.  I thought about that cold winter in Valley Forge, the bitter winter in the Ardenne forest at the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, the battles fought in the jungles of Vietnam, the mountains of Afghanistan and the deserts of Iraq. Our flag has flown in many places around the world. Freedom is not free, it is achieved by the service and sacrifice of men and women who have worn the uniform. Veterans, thank you for your sacrifice and service to our country.”

Mr. Jerry Madden, member of the Sons of the American Revolution and American Legion, spoke to the faculty, visitors, students and staff about the history of the different branches and how important of a role they have played in the history of our country. He dressed in time period regalia and had students volunteer to serve as his aides. Mr. Madden and Mrs. Madden also provided a “birthday cake” in honor of the Marine Corps 250th anniversary.

Cadets from the Youth Challenge Program at Camp Minden presented the colors. Veterans who served in each branch were asked to stand to be recognized as the Central Elementary Flag Brigade held flags representing each branch.
