Former Glenbrook star Maddox Mandino helped No. 7 seed Louisiana stay undefeated in the Sun Belt Tournament Wednesday in Montgomery, Ala.
Mandino, a junior center fielder, went 4-for-5 in a 12-11 victory over No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina. He scored two runs and had one stolen base.
The four-hit game was the first of Mandino’s career.
Mandino replaced Noah Lewis in the bottom of the second. Lewis was hit by a pitch in the first inning.
“I just like to come off the bench and do my part,” Mandino said. “That was the big thing. Noah is a fabulous player, a great player to play behind. I knew I had to pick up the slack he was giving up.”
Mandino’s bunt in the third was the Cajuns’ first hit.
Louisiana (36-21) improved to 2-0 in the tournament. The Cajuns plays No. 6 Texas State at 7:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Texas State (35-22) defeated No. 4 Appachian State 6-5 in the second round.
Louisiana defeated No. 10 Marshall 11-1 in seven innings in the first round Tuesday. The first round was single elimination. The tournament started double-elimination play Wednesday and it will continue until Sunday’s winner-take-all championship game.
