College baseball: Grambling State wins SWAC Tournament, punches ticket to NCAA Tournament

by Russell Hedges

The Grambling State Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally past Jackson State 6-5 in the SWAC Tournament Championship Game Saturday at Chandler Stadium in Atlanta.

With the victory, the GSU (26-26) receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Cameron Bufford scored the winning run on a throwing error. That came right after a slow-rolling bunt down the third-place line scored Kyle Walker, who led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error.

GSU’s rally came after JSU scored in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 lead.

GSU took its first lead at 4-2 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

JSU tied it with single runs in the fifth and seventh.

GSU had eight hits. Hatton went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Walker also went 2-for-5. Ashton Inman and Martavious White had doubles.

Javier Martinez, who pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, got the win. He allowed two hits, struck out three and walked two.
