College football: Grambling State puts three on All-SWAC Team

by Russell Hedges

Grambling State placed three-student-athletes on the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) All-Conference teams, announced by the conference on Monday morning.

Defensive end Sundiata Anderson and punter Jimmy Iles earned All-SWAC First Team honors while running back Chance Williams landed on the All-SWAC Second Team.

Anderson continued to be a leader and disruptive force on the Grambling State defense this season. The senior from College Park, Ga. racked up 60 total tackles, 32 solo tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and two forced fumbles. He ranked ninth in the SWAC in sacks.

Iles was one of the best punters in the SWAC in flipping field position and putting his team in position to win. Iles averaged 40.8 yards per punt on 59 punts. No punter in the SWAC pinned teams inside the 20 as much as Iles did. He placed SWAC-high 23 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. He had nine punts over 50 yards with a long of 65 yards. He also gave up only two touchbacks, the third least in the SWAC.

Williams had a breakout season for GSU this season. The sophomore from Baton Rouge, La. ran for 878 yards and six touchdowns on 148 carries. He averaged 5.9 yards per carry. His 878 rushing yards ranks him second in the SWAC. Williams was also key contributor to the Tigers air attack, making 15 receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown. He ran for over a 100 yards three times this season, including a career-high 174-yard performance in a win over Texas Southern.
