Josh McCormick’s 44-yard field goal with 21 seconds left lifted the Grambling State Tigers to a 26-24 victory over the Jackson State Tigers Saturday in the P&G Las Vegas HBCU Classic in Las Vegas.
Grambling State improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the SWAC. Jackson State, ranked No. 11 in the AFCA Cosches Poll, fell to 5-2 and 3-1.
JSU took a 24-23 lead with 2:15 left 2:15 left in the game.
GSU quarterback C’zavian Teasett suffered an injury late in the fourth. He lay motionless and left the field strapped to a board on a cart. He was take by ambulance to a hospital. His condition hasn’t been released.
Backup A’Myne Darensbourg directed the 11-play, 38-yard drive to the winning field goal. The drive included a big third-down completion to Barron Myles Jr.
GSU rallied from a 10-0 deficit. The Louisiana Tigers got on the board on a 59-yard pass from Teasett to Covadis Knighten with 1:56 left in the first half,
GSU cut the lead to one on Theodore Caballero’s 24-yard field goal on the final play of the half.
GSU took the lead in the third quarter with a 12-play, 83-yard drive capped by a 16-yard Teasett run.
The Tigers extended the lead to 23-10 on a 26-yard pass from Teasett to Andrew Frazier with 12:06 left in the game.
JSU roared back. Jared Lockhart completed a 62-yard touchdown pass to Nate Rembert with 9:41 left.
The Mississippi Tigers then drove 57 yards in 12 plays for the touchdown and PAT that put them on top 24-23.
Teasett completed 16-of-26 passes for 242?yards. Knighten caught five passes for 96 yards. Seven other Tigers had receptions.
GSU had 149 yards rushing. Tre Bradford had a team-high 64 on 11 carries. Andre Crews had 40 on six.
Jackson State used three quarterbacks and they passed for 250 yards. Donerio Davenport rushed for 98 yards on 11 carries.
