College football: Grambling State’s Joseph proud of players’ effort in loss to No. 1 Ohio State

The Grambling State Tigers fell to No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Ohio State 70-0 Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.

Grambling State dropped to 1-1. Ohio State improved to 2-0.

The game was GSU’s first against a Big Ten opponent.

“I’m proud of my players,” Grambling State Head Coach Mickey Joseph said in his postgame press conference. “I’m proud of my coaches. I’m proud of our support staff and I’m also proud of our band.

“They have a really good football team and I’m sure they’re going to be playing after January.”

Joseph said playing the game could benefit the Tigers down the road when they play teams with similar talent.

“It helps me understand my kids will fight no matter what,” he said. “My coaches will fight no matter what. 

The Buckeyes scored on their first four possessions en route to a 35-0 halftime lead.

The Tigers’ only stop was an interception by Tyrell Raby at the GSU 1.

Ohio State rolled up 651 yards total offense. The Buckeyes had 32 first downs.

Justin Sayin completed 18-of-19 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns. Jeremiah Smith had five catches for 119 yards and two TDs. Bo Jackson rushed for 108 yards on nine carries.

GSU had 166 total yards. C’Zavian Teasett completed 9-of-15 passes for 55 yards. Andre Crews rushed for 38 yards on five carries.
