MINDEN — Minden Veterans Safety Net along with others will host a Community Resource Fair on Wednesday, September 9, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Minden Medical Center cafeteria. The event will bring together healthcare professionals and community resources to provide practical information on topics that can help individuals, families and organizations better respond to emergencies and support those in need.
The free educational event will feature presentations addressing opioid overdose response, trauma-informed care, emergency preparedness for individuals with disabilities and recognizing Veterans who may be experiencing a crisis.
A presenter from the Louisiana Department of Health will provide Narcan Awareness and Proper Administration training. Participants will learn how Narcan (naloxone) can save a life during an opioid overdose emergency and how to properly administer the medication.
Javelin Hardy, LMSW, will present Trauma Care and Trauma-Informed Support, This overview of the 2 hour program will be focusing on how to identify and support individuals experiencing trauma. The presentation will explore what trauma is, common reactions to trauma, triggers, self-care, healthy coping skills, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) studies, PTSD, debriefing following critical incidents and the development of trauma-informed agency protocols.
The fair will also feature information on Emergency Preparedness for Individuals with Disabilities. Participants will receive practical steps and resources to help individuals prepare before, during and after an emergency.
Representatives from Overton Brooks VA Medical Center will provide an overview of SAVE Training, which teaches participants how to recognize warning signs and respond appropriately when a Veteran may be experiencing a crisis.
“Events like this provide our community with information and resources that can make a real difference,” said Gary Seegers, President of Webster Parish Veterans Safety Net. “Our goal is to bring valuable resources together in one location and give people practical knowledge they can use to help themselves, their families, coworkers and neighbors.”
The Community Resource Fair is open to the community, and participants are encouraged to attend the presentations and learn more about the resources available to help individuals navigate difficult and potentially life-threatening situations.
