The Dorcheat Historical Museum will mark Constitution Day on Thursday, September 17, with the opening of “Our Patriot Ancestors,” an exhibit connecting Northwest Louisiana residents with the people and events of the American Revolution.
The Constitution Day program will begin at 11 AM at the Dorcheat Museum and will feature an exhibit created by the Dorcheat-Bistineau Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The exhibit honors patriot ancestors of chapter members as well as Revolutionary War veterans buried in Northwest Louisiana.
Museum Executive Director Jessica Gorman said the exhibit was funded through a DAR America 250 grant and was designed to give local residents a personal connection to the nation’s founding.
“This exhibit was made possible by an America 250 grant through DAR, and it’s going to feature biographies of the patriot ancestors of our DAR chapter,” Gorman said. “We chose to do that as a means to connect local people directly to the events of the American Revolution through our ancestors. Of course, the ancestors of our chapter are probably shared ancestors with lots of other local people.”
The exhibit comes as communities across the country commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States and highlight the people and events associated with the nation’s founding.
Constitution Day is observed annually on September 17, commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787.
The public is invited to attend the Constitution Day program and view the exhibit at the Dorcheat Museum, located at 116 Pearl Street in Minden.
