With the recent appointment of a dedicated economic development director, the City of Minden is taking new strides to support long-term growth, according to Sarah Overall, who also leads the Minden Main Street program.
“There hasn’t been an economic development department in this administration nor a robust program in many years,” Overall said. “So I would say having a director, whether myself or anyone else for that matter, is a huge win and exciting for the City of Minden.”
Overall emphasized that meaningful economic progress requires sustained effort, clear vision, and patience. “True economic development takes time, vision and a consistent effort. Successful growth will not happen overnight as it can be slow and steady progression,” she said.
In her early months on the job, Overall is focused on assessment and strategic planning. “The first few months to a year is really a time period I need to assess what we have resource wise, building out a budget and strategically deciding which path we should go,” she said. “You have to invest money to make money. Just a fact of business.”
Though details remain confidential, Overall noted that there has already been interest from outside businesses. “We are already getting calls that will hopefully turn into job growth,” she said.
Infrastructure improvements are already in progress to support future development, with plans extending over the next few years. “Absolutely,” she said when asked if upgrades are underway. “This has been happening the last few years and will continue to improve.”
Over the next five years, Overall’s top priority is to develop a strategy rooted in data and long-term sustainability. “I’ve heard a lot of ‘Minden needs this or that’ in the last few months,” she said. “I value everyone’s input, but I also want to attract business that we can truly support for many years to come.”
Factors such as local workforce capacity, the housing market, health care infrastructure, and sales tax trends will guide future development plans. “There are many moving parts to an increase in economic growth,” Overall said. “My goal is to really learn as much as possible so we can strategize appropriately for success not just in 5 years but in 10, 20 years or longer.”
Preserving Minden’s identity is also a key concern as the city evolves. “The character is what will help sell Minden,” she said. “We do need to upgrade and enhance our look digitally so plans are underway for this.”
To businesses considering investment in the city, Overall offered encouragement: “In Minden, you won’t just find a place to do business; you’ll find a community that’s invested in your success. If you’re looking for a place where your business can grow roots and thrive long-term, Minden is ready to welcome you.”
