The inaugural Phillip’s Cottage 5K, set for April 12 in Minden, has received a major sponsorship boost from Gibsland Bank & Trust (GBT), which donated $3,000 on March 18, making the bank the event’s title sponsor.
The race, which has about 70 runners registered so far, aims to raise funds for Phillip’s Cottage, a transitional home for women with children graduating from Louisiana Adult & Teen Challenge. Organizers hope to reach at least 100 participants.
“We believe in Sara and the projects she’s a part of; she makes them very successful,” said GBT President Mike Hipp. “We appreciate the opportunity to support this worthy cause as a title sponsor.”
Sara McDaniel, who founded Phillip’s Cottage in honor of her late father, expressed gratitude for the donation. “Thank you for believing in me,” she said.
The event honors the legacy of Phillip Carroll, a longtime educator and pastor in Webster Parish known for his deep love for people and his passion for running. Carroll, who ran three miles daily, passed away on May 30, 2023, while preparing for his morning run.
McDaniel, his daughter, established Phillip’s Cottage, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to continue his lifelong mission of serving others. The home will provide transitional housing for up to three women and their children.
“My dad spent his entire life serving in ministry and the public school system, and I know nothing would make him happier than knowing his work is being carried on beyond the grave,” McDaniel said. “In addition to loving people well, he also loved to run. His birthday is April 15, and my plan is to hold Phillip’s 5K every year around his birthday to support Phillip’s Cottage—combining two things he cared deeply about: people and running.”
The 5K walk/run, fun run, and silent runner opportunities are open to participants. Those unable to attend in person can still support the cause as silent runners.
