by Russell Hedges

The Lakeside Warriors defeated D’Arbonne Woods 5-4 in the first of a three-game District 1-2A series Thursday in Farmerville.

Elsewhere, Minden dropped a tough 3-2 decision against North DeSoto in a District 1-4A game at Griffith Stadium, and North Webster fell to Red River 4-0 in a non-district game in Coushatta.

At D’Arbonne Woods, the Warriors broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh then held off the Timberwolves in the bottom of the inning.

Starting pitcher Hunter Sutton went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Matthew Aguilera went 2-for-3 with a double.

Sutton went 6 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked two.

After walks and errors helped D’Arbonne Woods get within one in the bottom of the seventh, Eli Campbell entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs. He struck out the final batter on four pitches.

Lakeside scored all three runs in the top of the inning with two outs. Aguilera drove in one run with his double. Sutton and Campbell followed with back-to-back singles.

Lakeside improved to 14-12 overall and 5-5 in district. D’Arbonne Woods dropped to 17-8 and 5-5.

At Minden, the Crimson Tide led 2-1 after six but North DeSoto scored two in the top of the seventh with two outs.

The Griffins had a double with one out and back-to-back singles with two.

The Tide had three hits. Starting pitcher Brody Bower had two RBI. The first came on a one-out single in the first. A groundout scored Jakobe Jackson in the third.

Bower allowed two hits, struck out five and walked six in five innings.

Minden dropped to 20-8 overall and completed district play 5-2. North DeSoto improved to 19-7 and 5-2.

Northwood (21-6, 6-0) faces Evangel Christian (20-7, 5-1) Friday night. The Falcons have clinched a least a share of the title. The Eagles can earn a share with a victory.

The district tournament has been canceled because of the heavy rain that forced the postponement and rescheduling of several games. The Minden-North DeSoto game was originally scheduled for Tuesday.

At Red River, the Knights dropped to 12-14 with the loss.

The regular season ends Monday. Regardless of how the rest of it plays out, Minden, Lakeside, Glenbrook and Doyline will be in the playoffs.

According to GeauxPreps.com, Minden is No. 14 in the non-select Division II power rankings, Lakeside No. 5 in Division IV and Doyline No. 13 in Division V. Glenbrook is No. 12 in select Division IV.

The top 24 teams in the non-select divisions and the top 20 in select divisions make the playoffs.

North Webster is still in contention for a berth. The Knights are No. 25 in non-select Division III.
