High school baseball: Spears’ gem helps Doyline roll into second round

The No. 12 seed Doyline Panthers advanced to the second round of the non-select Division V playoffs with a 6-0 victory over No. 21 Ebarb Friday at Doyline.

Doyline (14-13) will visit No. 5 Quitman (15-10) in the second round. The Wolverines received a first-round bye. 

Elsewhere, No. 24 seed North Webster fell to No. 9 Loreauville 7-1 in Game 1 of their best-of-3 non-select Division III first-round series at Loreauville.

Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled for 2 p.m.

At Doyline, Noah Spears tossed a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and only one walk.

The Panthers got off to a fast start, scoring three in the first inning and two in the second.

In the first, Spears doubled with one out. He and Dario Galvez scored on Cayden Mingo’s bunt single. Mingo scored the third run on a passed ball.

Jonas Florence and Kenneth Lee walked to start the second. They scored on Galvez’s one-out single.

The Panthers scored their final run in the sixth.

Ebarb closed its season 9-15.

At Loreauville, Dylan Navarre limited North Webster to three hits. He struck out 13 and walked three.

Loreauville improved to 18-12. North Webster dropped to 16-16.
