High school basketball: Crimson Tide down Haughton in first round of ‘Doc’ Edwards Invitational

The Minden Crimson Tide advanced to the quarterfinals of the “Doc” Edwards Invitational with a 52-47 first-round victory over Haughton Thursday at Benton.

The tournament, which features 14 boys and 15 girls teams, is sponsored by the Willis-Knighton Health System and hosted by Airline.

Minden (9-3) faces defending non-select Division II state champion and District 1-4A foe Bossier at noon Friday. Bossier (10-5) defeated Gibsland-Coleman 71-61 in the first round.

The winner advances to a 7:30 semifinal game against the Airline-BTW winner at Airline.

Cameron Parker and Darnell Morris led Minden with 18 and 15 points, respectively.

The Crimson Tide trailed 26-24 at the half and 36-35 after three quarters. 

Morris scored six and Parker five in the fourth. Both hit 3-pointers. Parker had three in the game.

Jayden Carey led Haughton (7-9) with 15 points. He sank three 3-pointers and scored 13 in the first half.

Josh Ross hit three 3s in the game and scored 12.

In the girls division, Minden fell to Captain Shreve in the first round.

The Lady Tiders (6-7) face Zwolle (6-15) in the consolidation quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. at Cope Middle School. The winner plays Northwood at 4:30 at Benton in the semifinals.
