A fast start helped the Glenbrook Apaches defeat the Bossier Bearkats 28-6 in their home opener at Apache Stadium Friday night.

Glenbrook improved to 2-0. Bossier dropped to 1-1.

Glenbrook scored on two of us first three possessions and led 14-0 at the half The Apaches extended the lead to 20-0 in the third quarter.

“I think that we progressed as a football team,” Glenbrook first-year Head Coach Regan Smith said. “I think that we got better. That’s not to say that we are where we need to be but we are moving in the right direction. We are improving and that makes me feel good about the future.”

Glenbrook scored on its opening possession on a 15-yard scramble down the visitors sideline by quarterback Easton Sanders.

Sanders completed three passes on the 59-yard drive, including one of 18 yards to Landry Powell on third-and-17. Tight end Garrett Powell also caught a 16-yard tight end pass to the Bearkats 32.

The Apaches’ second TD came on a 70-yard swing pass to Chase Sentell, who had plenty of help from blockers downfield.

The Glenbrook defense twice turned Bossier back inside the red zone, stopping fourth-down plays. The Bearkats reached the 19-yard line on the first threat and the 8 on the second.

Sentell went through a big hole off the right side for 33 yards and a TD in the third quarter.

Bossier returned the kickoff for a touchdown to cut the lead to 20-6.

Landry Powell, lined up at quarterback in the shotgun, raced 32 yards for the final score in the the the fourth quarter.

Smith said much of the credit for the Apaches’ 2-0 start goes to offensive coordinator James Thurman and defensive coordinator Patrick Thomas.

“I’m really, really proud of both our coordinators,” he said. “We called a tremendous game offensively. And defensively, I mean we are doing some things. We are holding people down that can play.”

One of the game’s best plays came on a two-point conversion after Glenbrook’s first TD.

Sanders went back to pass and was chased by several Bearkats. He reversed field and almost ran out of bounds before flinging a pass to Seth Mangrum in the end zone next to the sideline.

“Obviously we didn’t draw it up for him to reverse field three or four times,” Smith said. “And we’re screaming at him to throw the ball because on a two-point conversion they can’t return an interception.

“Easton and me and Coach Thurman talked about it after the game, just joking with him and messing with him,” Smith said. “ ‘Were you trying to see how long you could hold it?’

“Man, you talk about athletic and an unbelievable arm, unbelievable athleticism. He’s a junior. He’s special.”

Glenbrook heads to West Ferriday Friday to take on Delta Charter. The Storm (2-0) defeated The Willow School 14-10 Friday night.
