High school football: Glenbrook battles back against Bossier before Bearkats pull away

by Russell Hedges

IAfter getting in a big hole early, the Glenbrook Apaches battled back against Bossier Friday night, but the Bearkats pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 49-20 victory at Apache Stadium.

Glenbrook dropped to 1-1. Bossier improved to 2-0.

The Apaches trailed 21-0 in the first half. But they cut the lead to 21-14 with touchdowns on a 5-yard run by Gage White and a pass from Ryan Reagan to Darron Hollingsworth.

Bossier scored a touchdown with just 23 seconds left in the half to go up 28-14.

The Apaches got within eight with 3:36 left in the third quarter. They blocked a punt deep in Bossier territory. Slade Lollar took it about 10 yards for the score.

But the Bearkats answered with a TD on an 18-yard run by Lewis and added two more touchdowns in the fourth,

Glenbrook Head Coach Greg Tibbitt said Lewis, a sophomore, was the difference.

“We couldn’t tackle their quarterback in space,” he said. “That kid’s really good. He did a good job, busted a lot of big plays. He’s just a great athlete that they have.

“They did a really good job. They found what worked. We kept fighting and trying to find our way back in it just couldn’t get the stops and couldn’t get the ball when we needed to.”

Tibbitt thought his defense played well.

“Just ran out of gas late,” he said.

While Glenbrook doesn’t have as many two-way players as some Class 1A teams, several starters on offense are also backups on defense.

“Trying to keep them as fresh as we can,” Tibbitt said. “We have a handful going both ways.”

The heat and humidity took its toll.

Reagan, who also plays defense, rarely left the field. He missed one offensive series with leg cramps. White, a senior tight end, also missed a couple of series for the same reason.

Tibbitt said the game was a learning experience.

“It is what it is,” he said. “We talked about our growing and that’s what we’re doing right now. We’re growing and learning.”

Bossier Head Coach Gary Smith was impressed with the Apaches.

“It was closer than the score seemed to be,” he said.  “We pulled away in the fourth. Glenbrook did a good job. We were just lucky to get out of there.”

Glenbrook opens District 1-1A play Thursday on the road against Ringgold. The Redskins (1-1) defeated Plain Dealing 52-14 Friday night.
