The Minden Crimson Tide and Glenbrook Apaches came away with victories in jamboree action Friday night.
Minden defeated Lakeside 19-0 in the Pineland Jamboree at Haynesville. Glenbrook defeated Montgomery 9-0 in the b1 Bank Apache Jamboree at Glenbrook.
In the other 15-minute games in the Pineland Jamboree, Minden rallied from a 14-0 deficit to tie defending non-select Division IV champion Haynesville 14-14, North Webster fell to Homer 18-6 and tied Haynesville 0-0, and Lakeside fell to Homer 16-0.
In the other 12-minute “games” at Glenbrook, Loyola defeated Glenbrook 20-0 and Montgomery 28-0.
Minden Head Coach Spencer Heard liked the way his team performed.
“I thought we played well coming out against Lakeside,” he said. “In a scrimmage and jamboree there is always stuff you’re still trying to clean up and stuff to work on. Overall I thought it was good.”
Lucas Owens Jr. scored a pair of rushing touchdowns against Lakeside and Tyree Davis returned a fumble for TD.
Heard especially liked the way his team fought back against Haynesville. The Golden Tornado dominated the first part of the period with its running game and took the 14-0 lead with 7:62 left to play.
Minden played Lakeside in the second game and Haynesville in the fourth.
“I thought when we came out against Haynesville we were kind of flat,” Heard said. “I don’t know if it was because we had been sitting over there for awhile. We looked kind of flat. We finally woke up, got a couple of big plays, turnover or something, and got a little momentum. “They had all the momentum and basically we took it back and kept it the remainder of the time. Our kids are really excited about that. Came out feeling about it and ready to go into next week.”
King threw touchdown passes to Jardon Carey and Jaden Johnson. He also passed to Javen Calloway for the tying two-point conversion after Johnson’s TD with 1:06 left.
“He’s a sophomore,” Heard said. “I think kind of early on he had a little nerves or something. He had a few throws that were high which typically happens. I think he kind of calmed down as the game went on and started to complete balls. Once he got into a rhythm we were throwing the ball well.”
Glenbrook’s defense dominated against Montgomery and gave the Apaches a 2-0 lead with a safety after a bad snap. Carson Whitehead ripped off some good runs. Braxton Tibbitt threw a touchdown pass to Carson Powell.
The Apaches did make some mistakes and on their final possession.
“I thought we started out well just didn’t finish the quarter like I felt we should have,” Head Coach Greg Tibbitt said. “But I thought we played really good defensively and ran the ball well at times. Just couldn’t put together a drive there at the end. Some questionable penalties but I guess you’re going to have that. But I was pleased with that performance.”
Loyola simply had too much firepower for Glenbrook. The Flyers dropped down from District 1-3A this season after going 10-2 and finishing second in District 1-4A last season.
Senior quarterback Bryce Restovich ranks among the best in the state. The Flyers also return their top two receivers.
Glenbrook opens the season Friday at home against Winnfield.
North Webster Head Coach Christopher Wilson thought his team performed well against Homer and Haynesville. The Knights had some players out including their starting running back and safety.
“Homer is just really super explosive,” Wilson said. “We had them in some good situations in third and fourth down. Homer just made plays.
“It was third-and-30 and they picked up 23 on a screen. Then on fourth-and-6 they made a play and scored a touchdown. Early in the game my corner was right in a great position and the kid from Homer just made a play.
“Then against Haynesville we did what we needed to do. We stopped the run. We rallied to the ball. That’s what I encouraged them to do before we started. I’m excited about next week.”
North Webster hosts Minden Friday. The teams met in Week 4 last season and the Knights rallied from 20-7 down in the second half to win 21-20.
Lakeside didn’t score, but the Warriors had some bright spots.
Lakeside put together a good drive late against Homer. Malik Thorn ran hard and Brandon Jackson made a nice catch on a pass from Levi Bogdan. The Warriors had a first-and-goal at the 9 but a penalty moved them back five yards and the Pelicans stopped a run on fourth down.
One of Homer’s touchdowns was set up by a fumble at the Lakeside 32.
After Minden took a 7-0 lead, wingback Eric Jones made a long run to the Tide 19. The drive ended when Abreon Curry intercepted a pass in the end zone.
Lakeside opens the season Friday at Jonesboro-Hodge.
