The Glenbrook Apaches fell to the Bossier Bearkats 34-7 Thursday night at Memorial Stadium in Bossier City.
But the final margin was hardly indicative of the battle the Apaches (2-0) gave the Class 4A Bearkats (2-0).
Glenbrook trailed just 8-0 at the half and easily could have been leading. Bossier also scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including two on big plays.
In the Apaches’ season-opening loss to Winnfield, turnovers were the difference. Thursday night, it was missed opportunities.
Glenbrook drove inside the Bossier 10 on its first two series but came away empty both times.
Trailing 8-0, the Apaches thought they had a touchdown on a run by quarterback Braxton Tibbitt on fourth-and-goal from the 3. But Tibbitt was ruled down inches short of the goal line.
Later in the second quarter, Glenbrook had a first down at the Bearkats 34 after a punt but couldn’t take advantage.
In the third quarter, the Apaches put together a sustained drive to a first down at the Bossier 5. Tibbitt completed passes to Brayson Festervan and Carson Powell, including one to Powell to covert a fourth-and-11 from the Bossier 31. Carson Whitehead and Ryan Reagan had some nice gains on runs.
But a sack on second down moved the ball back to the 16. An incomplete pass was followed by another loss on fourth down.
Glenbrook lost veteran center Franklin Bridwell to an injury late in the first quarter. Tanner Cox, who played an outstanding game on defense, was pressed into service and rarely left the field on the hot and humid night.
Glenbrook’s lone touchdown came on a 62-yard run by Kleaton Davis through a big hole up the middle with 5:26 left in the game. Sam Scroggs kicked the PAT. The Apaches then recovered an onside kick but an interception in the end zone on a great play by Bossier’s Javeon Mitchell ended the threat.
Bossier quarterback Montrevell Lewis made some big plays as expected, but the Glenbrook defense turned in a solid performance.
Ace Rolen had an interception in the end zone just before the half and Davis Edwards had one early in the fourth.
Darron Hollingsworth and Reagan made some big catches to keep drives going on the the first two series.
Glenbrook visits Haughton next Friday. The Bucs (1-0) face Southwood Friday night.
