By now, high school football players across the state are generally tired of going head-to-head with their teammates in practice.
This week, most of them will finally get an opportunity to test themselves against an actual opponent In scrimmages, the next step in preparation for the regular season. The scrimmages follow the first official day of practice and the first day of practice where pads can be worn and precede next week’s annual Pineland Jamboree at Haynesville and Glenbrook Jamboree..
All four Webster Parish schools are having scrimmages Thursday. Minden hosts Haughton and Nortj Webster visits Magnolia, Ark., Glenbrook travels to Lakeview to face Green Oaks and Lakeview and Lakeside visits Cedar Creek.
Scrimmages vary in format but most include a series of plays featuring the first and second teams. Some include a segment working on goalline offense and defense. Some also conclude with a regulation 12-minute quarter.
Minden’s defense should get a good test from Haughton. The Bucs have three of the top offensive players in the area.
Quarterback Taylor Westhersby, entering his third season as a starter, passed for 3,012 yards and 23 touchdowns last year. Receiver Ethan Johnson set the school single-season record for receptions and yards with 102 for 1,477. Craig had a combined 2,124 yards rushing and receiving.
Johnson and Craig were both first-team All-District 1-5A selections. Weathersby was second team. Haughton struggled on defense and finished 2-8 last season.
Minden has a new starting quarterback for the first time since 2023, sophomore Kaiden King. This will be his second action against an opponent. He performed well in last spring’s scrimmage against Parkway.
Glenbrook’s scrimmage features three teams looking to rebound from challenging 2025 seasons. The Apaches went 3-6 with a very young team. Green Oaks was 3-7 and Lakeview 0-10.
According to Lee Breechen’s Louisiana Football Magazine, Green Oaks returns starting quarterback Javontaye Dean. Glenbrook has most of its roster back.
Freshman Braxton Tibbitt and sophomore Louie Collins have been working at quarterback in the offseason. Junior receiver Darron Hollingsworth was a second-team All-District 1-1A last season.
Lakeside’s opponent Cedar Creek made the playoffs last season and finished 6-5. According to Louisiana Football Magazine, Brett Bell returns at quarterback. Bell rushed for 950 yards last season.
Hit by injuries down the stretch, Lakeview finished 4-6 last season. The Warriors’ roster is loaded with experienced players who have been together through several seasons. Levi Bogdan takes the reins at quarterback.
According to MaxPreps, North Webster’s opponent Magnolia went 5-5 last season.
North Webster is coming off a 4-7 season. Junior quarterback Justin Stewart is back with a season of experience. Linebacker Jeremiah Washington is one of the area’s top returning players.
