High school girls basketball: DeAndre Alexander named head coach at Minden

DeAndre Alexander has been named head coach at Minden.

The announcement was made Wednesday on the school’s Facebook page. Alexander replaces Kelli Edwards, who stepped down after one season.

Alexander comes to Minden from his alma mater Arcadia where he was the associate girls basketball head coach and served as a boys assistant. He coached there for almost two decades and helped the Lady Hornets win state championships in 2016, 2021 and 2024.

Alexander played basketball at Spoon River College in Canton, Ill. and ULM.

He was inducted into the Spoon River Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023.

According to an article on the Spoon River website upon his induction to the Hall of Fame, Alexander earned an associate degree in criminal justice in 2003.He ranked seventh in the nation in scoring and third in rebounding, was named to the All-Conference First Team, earned Region 24’s All-Tournament Most Valuable Player honors, and was an NJCAA All-American.

He transferred to ULM and led the team in rebounding and was second in scoring.

According to the article, Alexander earned a bachelor’s from ULM in 2007 and a Master’s in Sports Administration (plus 30) from Grambling State in 2010.

Alexander has five children — DeAndre’a, DeAsia, Braylon, Asher and Demir. He and his wife Alexis have been married since 2022.

DeAndre’a was a member of Arcadia’s 2016 state championship team and played for Louisiana Tech and Grambling State.

DeAsia helped the Lady Hornets win the non-select Division IV championship in 2024 and reach the non-select Division IV state title game In 2025. She was the District 1-1A MVP last season as a junior and Arcadia reached the semifinals.

According to the Spoon River article, “Alexander served four years on Arcadia’s City Council, was appointed to serve as Bienville Parish Constable for two years, and he currently serves on ULM’s Alumni Association Board of Directors.

“He is active in Holland Grove Baptist Church, Tea Time for Cure (to support breast cancer awareness and research), Men Standing Against Domestic Violence, the NAACP, and Arcadia Parks and Recreation.

“He’s the founder of a mentoring program for ages 7-16 called Adopt-A-Son, and Calling All Young Men, an organization he created in response to rapidly-growing gun violence in his community. He’s also been honored with the Bienville Parish 30 & Up Top Professionals Award and ULM’s 2021 Rising Young Alumni Award.”
